Essaouira is known for its relaxed coastal vibe and steady Atlantic winds. Often described as a quieter alternative to Morocco’s larger cities, this seaside town blends historic walls, a walkable medina, and long sandy beaches. After the intensity of Marrakech, Essaouira offered our family a welcome change of pace — slower, breezier, and manageable with kids.
Explore the Fish Market and Famous Blue Boats
Essaouira’s working harbour is one of the city’s most iconic sights, best known for its rows of bright blue fishing boats. Each day, the boats return with the catch, which is sold right at the docks and often grilled nearby for lunch. Wandering slowly through the narrow lane offers a vivid glimpse into daily life in this seaside community.
Kids will love watching the activity unfold — from fishermen unloading their boats to vendors cleaning and arranging seafood. Our boys were fascinated by the variety on display, from fish and shrimp to squid, eels, and even live crabs. It’s the kind of place where you can linger, soak in one of Essaouira’s most recognizable scenes, and even buy fish to have grilled on the spot at nearby stands.
Wander the Medina
Essaouira’s medina is often described as one of the most relaxed medinas in Morocco. With its more open layout, offering wider alleys, whitewashed buildings, and plenty of natural light filtering in from above, it’s easier for families to explore at a slower pace.
After navigating the medina in Marrakech, Essaouira felt noticeably calmer. The alleys were less crowded and easier to move through, with fewer motorcycles and no donkeys or carts weaving past. Sunlight filtered through the buildings, creating an airy atmosphere. We even felt comfortable letting the boys walk a bit ahead to explore on their own. People strolled from shop to shop, looking or sampling products, while vendors seemed content to observe rather than aggressively sell. It made wandering genuinely enjoyable.
Spend the Morning at the Beach
Essaouira is often called the Windy City of Africa, thanks to the steady Atlantic breezes that shape daily life along the coast. While wind conditions vary by season, afternoons are typically much breezier, making mornings the best time to enjoy the beach — especially with kids.
The long sandy shoreline and seaside boardwalk offer an easy place to stroll, take in the views, and stop at one of the nearby cafés. Families will find plenty of open space for playing, walking, or simply watching the activity along the shore. During our visit, the boys enjoyed building sandcastles and running along the beach, though swimming was short-lived. The water was chilly in February, and they only lasted a few minutes before retreating back to the sand.
Explore the Castelo Real of Mogador
Perched at the edge of the medina overlooking the Atlantic, the Castelo Real of Mogador is a historic seaside fortress built by the Portuguese in the 14th century. With its stone walls, ocean views, and maze-like passageways, it’s the kind of place that naturally sparks curiosity — especially for kids who enjoy exploring and imagining life in another time.
Walking through the fortress felt like stepping into a story. The boys loved wandering through narrow corridors, climbing along the ramparts, and peeking out toward the crashing waves below. Fans of Game of Thrones may recognize the setting, as parts of the series were filmed here, but even without that connection, the castle is a memorable stop that combines history, movement, and wide-open views.
Join a Pickup Soccer Game on the Beach
Essaouira’s long, windy beach is more than just a scenic backdrop — it’s a gathering place. On weekends especially, the sand fills with activity, from kite surfers harnessing the Atlantic breeze to groups setting up soccer games along the shore.
Families may find themselves watching — or quickly joining — one of the many games taking place. Some are organized league matches with cones and referees, while others are informal pickup games with backpacks marking the goals. Our boys were quickly invited to join in and had a wonderful time, despite knowing very little French. It was a great reminder that sports truly are a universal language, allowing kids from different places to connect instantly and play without needing many words.
More Fun in Essaouira
Essaouira offers many family-friendly experiences beyond what we were able to fit into during our stay. While illness limited our ability to try all that we hoped, other families recommend riding camels or horses along the wide sandy beach, visiting a local cheese farm in the surrounding countryside, and taking advantage of the city’s famous winds with kite surfing or windsurfing lessons. With its relaxed pace and outdoor focus, Essaouira is well-suited to slow travel and an easy addition to a family itinerary.
Easygoing and Family-Friendly
Even with a limited visit, Essaouira left a strong impression. Its welcoming atmosphere made it a relaxing and enjoyable stop on our road trip and an easy place to explore with kids. Whether you’re wandering the docks, watching a soccer game unfold on the sand, or simply enjoying the sea breeze, Essaouira offers families a breezy coastal pause and a great addition to a Morocco itinerary.
