Ubud offers a completely different side of Bali—one that goes beyond the beaches and gives families a deeper look into Balinese traditions. Surrounded by lush rice terraces and temples, it’s a place where culture, nature, and adventure come together.
Here are some of our favourite things to do in Ubud with kids, along with a few we considered along the way.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces
Seeing Bali’s famous rice terraces in person had been on my list for years, and Tegallalang did not disappoint—once we moved beyond the entrance.
At first, it felt very commercialized, with photo platforms, swings, and plenty of opportunities to capture the “perfect” Instagram shot. But if you follow the walking paths down into the valley and continue across to the far side, the experience quickly changes.
The crowds thin out, the noise fades, and you’re left walking through quiet, lush terraces that feel far more authentic. At times, we had the trails completely to ourselves.
After months of travelling through Southeast Asia, this was the view I felt like I had been searching for—and finally found.
Tip: Visit in the late afternoon to catch the glow of the setting sun on the terraces.

Balinese Dance Performance
We watched the Kecak Fire and Trance Dance, which combines rhythmic chanting, storytelling, and elaborate costumes. The energy and dramatic scenes kept the boys engaged, making it an enjoyable way to experience Balinese culture as a family.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t a typical “fire show” with tricks or stunts. Instead, the focus is on storytelling and performance, which makes it engaging in a completely different way.
Tip: Before the performance begins, you’re given a short synopsis—definitely take a few minutes to read it so you can follow the story.
Rice Farming Experience
One of the most fun hands-on experiences we had in Ubud was spending time at a local rice farm.
The day included a walk through the fields, learning about the growing and harvesting process, helping prepare a traditional meal, planting rice, and even fishing in a small pond. The boys loved the freedom to explore and be involved in each activity.
It also gave us a new appreciation for the time, patience, and effort that goes into producing something as simple as rice—something we often take for granted.

Campuhan Ridge Walk
If you’re looking for a quieter activity, the Campuhan Ridge Walk offers a peaceful escape from Ubud’s busy streets.
The trail begins near Gunung Lebah Temple, crosses a bridge, then climbs to a ridge with open views. From there, the path levels out and continues for about 2 km (4 km return).
We found it to be a relaxing walk, especially in the early morning before the heat sets in. That said, it didn’t quite match the perfectly manicured photos we had seen online—the grasses were overgrown, and the scenery felt more natural than polished.
Still, it’s a nice option if you’re looking for space to move and a break from the crowds.
Bike Around Mount Batur
Mount Batur, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, is a popular day trip from Ubud. For those seeking adventure, it offers several ways to experience its dramatic landscape.
Many travellers opt for an early morning hike (often starting around 2 am) to reach the summit for sunrise, while others explore the base of the volcano by cycling a 28 km loop through lava fields, villages, and scenic countryside.
Both options are physically demanding and are better suited for families with older kids. We chose to cycle without fully understanding what to expect—but despite a few hiccups, it turned into one of our most memorable days in Bali.

Monkey Forest
The Sacred Monkey Forest is one of Ubud’s most well-known attractions, but it tends to be a bit polarizing for families.
The macaques are very used to people and can be playful—but also mischievous and, at times, aggressive. After hearing mixed reviews, we chose to skip it.
If you’re considering a visit, it’s worth doing a bit of research to decide if it’s the right fit for your family.
Temples in and Around Ubud
As the cultural heart of Bali, Ubud is home to several beautiful and easily accessible temples.
By the time we arrived in Ubud, after four months of travelling through Asia, our boys had reached their limit with temples, so we decided to take a break. But if it’s your first time in Bali, visiting a few can add meaningful context to your trip.
Popular options include:
- Pura Taman Saraswati (lotus temple in central Ubud)
- Tirta Empul (sacred water temple)
- Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave)

Where to Stay in Ubud
We stayed at Arana Garden House, which offered a quiet retreat just off a busy street. Once inside the property, the atmosphere shifted completely to a calm garden setting with a pool and open courtyard.
Having a peaceful place to return to at the end of the day made a big difference in Ubud.

Local Food Worth Trying
Ubud has no shortage of great food, but one meal still stands out.
Warung Makan Bu Rus is an incredible local restaurant. From the street, the smell of BBQ drifts from a large open grill, drawing you in. But as you move past the busy entrance, the space opens into a peaceful garden surrounded by greenery and soft music.
It felt calm and removed from the bustle of town and the food was delicious. To this day, we still talk about “the best ribs we have ever had” from there.
A Different Side of Bali
Whether you’re biking around volcanoes, walking through rice terraces, or simply enjoying a quiet meal, Ubud creates space for experiences that feel a little different from those of a typical beach vacation.
For families, it’s a chance to balance adventure with culture—and to see a deeper side of Bali that often becomes a highlight of the trip.
