Hiking to La Piscina: A Secluded Beach Adventure in Bocas del Toro

Tucked away on Isla Colón, La Piscina is a small, tranquil cove with soft sand, warm water, and plenty of shade. It’s the kind of beach that feels like a hidden treasure, and the journey to get there only adds to the adventure. While it takes some effort to reach, families who make the trek are rewarded with peaceful surroundings, calm swimming conditions, and a true escape from the crowds.

Whether you hike, bike, or arrive by boat, La Piscina offers a laid-back, off-the-grid beach day.

How to Get to La Piscina (Step-by-Step)

We drove from town and used Google Maps to get us to the starting point: a metal gate at the trail entrance. We parked on the side of the road (parking seemed unofficial, but our car was fine after 6 hours). From here, the walk is flat and easy, but signage is limited, so follow these steps carefully!

Trail Directions:

  1. Start at the metal gate and follow the main dirt trail.

2. At the first fork, stay to the right on the main path.

3. You’ll soon reach a clearing with two signs (both say “Bluff Beach Trail”). Take the right-hand trail.

4. Arrive at a T-junction with two small signs on a tree branch:

    • “Bridge” → left
    • “River” → right
Take the Bridge Trail (left). The River Trail joins later but can be muddy or flooded in the rainy season, making it not ideal for bikes.

5. About 100m in, there’s a fork. Go right on the narrow trail with a grey diamond marker nailed to a tree.

6. Cross the bridge until you reach a clearing with a stone house. At the end of the road, you will arrive at another T-junction. Go right.

7. Don’t give up. You’re almost there. Keep going until the next fork in the road with two signs:

    • “Monkey Island”
    • “Rock Beach Trail”

Take the Monkey Island trail.

8. A short way in, you will finally see the first La Piscina sign! You might hear howler monkeys in the distance—they’re loud but harmless.

9. Continue to the next clearing and turn right, where you’ll spot another La Piscina sign. Look up and you may see howler monkeys in the trees.

10. Cross the plank bridge, follow the last sign, and—after a few more steps—you’ve made it!

Tips for Visiting with Kids

• Allow plenty of time: The hike takes about 50 minutes each way, so don’t rush. Bring snacks, take breaks, and treat the walk as part of the adventure.
• Watch for wildlife: We saw sloths and howler monkeys in the trees. Keep voices low and eyes up!
• Wear proper footwear: The trail is mostly flat but can get muddy or slippery in spots—flip-flops might not cut it.
• Set expectations: Unlike developed beaches, there are no restaurants or facilities here. It’s all about nature.

What to Bring

• Water and snacks (there are no food vendors)
• Towels and a change of clothes
• Sun protection (even with shade, the sun can be intense)
• Swimsuits and sandals or water shoes
• A small blanket or mat for sitting
• A bag to carry out all your trash

Is It Worth the Effort?

Absolutely—but it depends on what you’re looking for. La Piscina offers a calm, shaded, and secluded escape, great for families who want a quiet beach. That said, it is a trek in and out. But with a bit of planning and a sense of jungle adventure, a trip to La Piscine can be a great addition to any Bocas itinerary.
