Thinking of Visiting Thailand?

From the bustling streets of Bangkok to the jungles of Chiang Mai and the beaches of Krabi, our time in Thailand was fast-paced and filled with one adventure after another. Each stop brought something completely new, and deepened our appreciation for a country full of culture, wild beauty, and delicious cuisine.

If you’re planning a family trip to Thailand, this 21-day itinerary offers a blend of cities, temples, beaches, and wildlife!

Days 1-3: Bangkok – Temples and Tuk-Tuks

Bangkok is a feast for the senses, with glittering temples, bustling streets, and vibrant markets at every turn. Highlights included exploring the grandeur of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, spotting the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, and trying tuk-tuk rides that kept the kids holding on tight! We balanced sightseeing with downtime, enjoying foot massages, wandering Khao San Road, and watching the sunset over Wat Arun.

Day 4: Flight to Chiang Rai

A short flight to Chiang Rai and you’ll instantly feel the pace slow down. It was a great change of scenery and a perfect reset before we started exploring all that Northern Thailand had to offer.

Day 5: Bike to the White Temple

The ride to Wat Rong Khun was a bit more chaotic than we expected, but it turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the day. Once we reached the temple, the kids were instantly captivated by its whimsical, almost surreal design. The white exterior and mirrored details make it feel like something out of a fairytale, and the intricate carvings give you plenty to look at—even for kids.

The temple’s blend of traditional symbolism and contemporary art makes it a striking stop for kids and adults alike, and it’s one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.

Day 6: Bus to Chiang Mai

We travelled to Chiang Mai through the winding mountain roads – ready for our next adventure.

Days 7-11: Chiang Mai – Elephants and Waterfalls

Chiang Mai immediately captured our hearts with its mix of adventure, culture, and family-friendly experiences. Over five days, we explored the sticky limestone rocks of Bua Thong Falls, turned elephant “poop” into paper at the Elephant Poopoo Paper Park, wandered through the Old Town, and spent a full day getting up close with rescued elephants at the Elephant Nature Park.

Day 12: Bus to Sukhothai

From Chiang Mai, we headed south to Sukhothai and packed ourselves into a tiny tuk-tuk for a short ride to our homestay – ready for a good sleep before heading to the ancient ruins the next day.

Day 13: Bike Sukhothai Historical Park

Sukhothai Historical Park is best experienced by bike, and it’s a great activity for families who enjoy history, wide open spaces, and a slower pace. We spent the morning weaving between temples, Buddha statues, and ponds, letting the kids lead the way as they discovered each new ruin. It was one of those places where you could feel the history all around you, and the kids loved the freedom of riding through the complex.

Day 14: Travel to Krabi (via Bangkok)

A bus ride to Bangkok, then a short flight to Krabi, and you’ll be dipping your toes in the turquoise waters of Southern Thailand.

Days 15–20: Ao Nang, Krabi

Ao Nang became our base for the final stretch of our trip, and it offered a great mix of beaches, island day trips, and unique nature experiences. We spent our days exploring emerald pools, kayaking through mangroves, snorkelling in crystal-clear water, and taking in the laid-back vibe of southern Thailand.

For families, Ao Nang is an ideal destination because it’s easy to navigate, has plenty of kid-friendly activities, and still feels like an adventure every day.

Day 21: Flight Back to Bangkok

Return to Bangkok for your final day before heading home.

Beyond the Beaches

After three weeks of travelling through Thailand, we felt like we’d truly experienced the country’s wonders and beauty. Thailand is a destination that rewards families who are willing to explore beyond the typical beach vacation. Whether you’re navigating the bustling streets of Bangkok, biking through ancient ruins in Sukhothai, kayaking through mangroves, or walking beside elephants, you’re sure to return home with a suitcase full of memories.
