Snorkelling in Thailand is one of those experiences that thrills kids and adults alike. Colourful fish, sea turtles, and clear, warm waters make every stop feel like a small adventure. Our full-day tour from Ao Nang to the Phi Phi Islands quickly became one of the highlights of our Thailand trip—a perfect combination of wildlife, scenery, and family fun.

Snorkelling in Ao Nang, Krabi
Ao Nang, on Thailand’s southwestern coast, is an ideal base for families looking to explore the islands. Towering limestone cliffs, calm turquoise bays, and vibrant coral reefs create stunning scenery and safe swimming conditions for kids. Nearby islands, especially the Phi Phi Islands, offer protected waters teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, reef sharks, and—seasonally—whale sharks. With easy boat access, warm water, and a family-friendly atmosphere, Ao Nang is hard to beat for a snorkelling adventure.

A Full Day of Snorkelling, Wildlife, and Island Views
We chose a full-day tour with Fast Manta, which allowed Derek to scuba dive while the boys and I snorkelled. The tour included three stops in clear, calm waters where we encountered reef sharks, sea turtles, tropical fish, and even sea snakes. Between the scenery, wildlife, and sunshine, it was an unforgettable day for the whole family.
Why We Loved Fast Manta
Fast Manta provides a great experience with expert guides, amazing customer service, and a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.
Family-Friendly Flexibility: Snorkelling and diving options make it easy for families to enjoy the day together. Derek went scuba diving while the boys and I snorkelled, and everyone had a great time.
Small Groups & Plenty of Staff: The boat was staffed with a captain, two crew members assisting with boarding, gear, snacks, and lunch, and multiple guides based on group size. In the water, this meant kids always had support nearby and extra eyes on safety.
Knowledgeable Guides: The guides were enthusiastic and clearly passionate, sharing a wealth of information about the local marine life. They helped the kids spot fish, turtles, reef sharks, and sea snakes, and provided extra assistance in areas with stronger currents.
Spacious Catamaran: The catamaran was clean, well-maintained, and never felt crowded. There was a shaded seating area with tables for meals and breaks, as well as an open deck for enjoying the scenery between snorkelling stops.
Thoughtful Onboard Care: Unlimited bottled water was available throughout the day, along with electrolyte replacement powder and anti-nausea medication for anyone feeling unwell. Lunch and snacks were included and delicious—something we appreciated on such a full day.
Strong Focus on Reef Protection: Staff checked in with guests at the start of the day to see if they had their own reef-safe sunscreen. If not, an approved alternative was provided at no extra cost, reinforcing their commitment to protecting the coral.

Tips for Snorkelling with Kids
Water Safety: Ensure kids are comfortable in the water and wear life vests.
Sun Protection: We learned this one the hard way. Between the cool water and breeze on the boat, it’s easy to forget how strong the sun is—and we ended the day with sunburns to prove it. Wear rash guards, reapply sunscreen frequently, and take breaks in the shade.
Snorkel Gear: Confirm that kid-size masks and fins are available.
Jumping In: Teach kids to check their surroundings and hold their masks securely to prevent leaks.
Stay Hydrated: The sun, saltwater, and swimming can dehydrate you quickly.
Reef Respect: Remind kids not to touch coral or animals underwater, and follow the guide’s instructions.

A Day on the Water
Snorkelling around the Au Nang Islands offers a magical, hands-on way for kids to explore marine life while surrounded by some of Thailand’s most beautiful scenery. Calm waters, friendly guides, and colourful wildlife made it a day our family still talks about, and an adventure we’d happily repeat.
